With English being the lingua franca of the business world, you’d expect that Business English teaching would be a major industry in its own right. Business English, which teaches - naturally - the language commonly used in business-to-business interactions, is, indeed a major part of the English learning world as a whole. For tutors in particular, Business English is a unique opportunity; show enough credentials and know-how, and you can run courses for big companies, and make a steady income as you do it.

So, in the online English teaching sphere, you might expect a glut of companies and platforms to hone in on this specific area of language teaching. Well, there’s hardly a stampede, you'll be surprised to discover, and so it’s down to the likes of Voxy to fill a sizeable void.

For educators interested in teaching the lexicon of business, Voxy is a fantastic opportunity. With major corporations lining up to enrol their employees in courses, it’s a great way for savvy TEFL entrepreneurs to network, build their teaching skill-set and earn a salary that’s comparable to some of the most competitive in ESL teaching.

Using an AI-driven platform, Voxy very much mirrors the companies it works with; it has an eye on constantly developing its approach, puts technology at the forefront of its methodology, and is obsessed with making the user experience personalised and tailored. It's a personalised language-learning app, with lessons updated daily.

Where does this approach leave teachers? What kind of lessons are being given, what’s the application process like, and how does Voxy stack up against other English learning companies? Let’s dive in and discover what Voxy classes are all about.

Voxy: An Overview

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Business English means drier lessons, less inspiring vocabulary or lessons that, simply put, aren’t as fun. If anything, the Voxy approach puts real-world events and practical learning at the forefront of its language teaching methodology.

Since forming in 2010, Voxy has been seen as something of a “disruptor” in Educational Technology circles. Using an integrated mobile and web platform, the company has utilised new media and new technology to create lesson plans that students can take both in a classroom setting and in their own time. With novel ideas like karaoke-style music programmes, using news stories from the Associated Press, and utilising real-life scenarios, Voxy aims to cut through any superfluous learning and get users ready to converse and work in English. It's also quite fun for employees!

Voxy boasts that it can provide learners with 100+ new language lessons per month, based on their own preferences, their specific abilities and what they’re most interested in. A teacher, then, becomes something of a coach, helping users to empower themselves. It’s a very modern, helpful and specific approach to English teaching. Still, given the millions of users and the several rounds of investment that Voxy has received to date, it’s obviously one that works.

What are the requirements to teach with Voxy?

If Business English is very much your scene, and you’re a TEFL teacher looking for opportunities to teach English online, you probably want us to cut to the chase. So, then: what are the teach English online requirements for landing a language teaching job with Voxy?

Bachelor's degree

You don’t need to hold a bachelor’s degree to apply for a role teaching with Voxy. However, if you do not have a teaching certificate, or you are working towards a teaching certificate, a degree is preferred.

TEFL certification

You must either hold a teaching certificate/TEFL qualification or be working towards one when you apply to conduct Voxy English lessons.  Ideally, you’ll have completed a TEFL course of at least 120 hours of training time by the time you start to tutor with Voxy.

We would recommend that you undertake a Business English Advanced TEFL course before you apply to teach with Voxy. This will give you a real education in how Business English is taught, which teaching phrases are most suitable and give you an overall understanding of language learning for specific learning areas.

Native/non-native

Fluent speakers of English, both native and non-nativex, can apply for a role with Voxy. Knowledge of other languages is also crucial (as we’ll later explore), meaning that non-native speakers have an advantage.

Experience

You must have over 3 years experience of teaching students to learn English. Your experience must include both group and individual private tutoring, as well as task-based language learning. The latter is particularly helpful given Voxy’s status as a task-based personalised language learning app and service.

If you want to teach English online with no experience, don’t fret; there are lots of other options out there!

A second language

Unlike most companies and platforms that help people learn English, Voxy is strict about applicants knowing at least one other language. Specifically, knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is particularly helpful, given Voxy’s popularity in South America and southwest Europe.

You will need to have verifiable proof of your ability in other languages.

Job description

As far as English teaching jobs go, Voxy is an interesting proposition. When students first start with the company, they are onboarded onto a specific teaching platform. It’s a software that’s available both on a mobile app, and on a student’s browser; a central system where lessons can be booked and material can be studied.

When the student first uses the software, they are asked about their current level of English proficiency, their preferences and what they’re interested in learning. The whole course is algorithmically tailored to the student’s preferences and desired learning outcomes. The teacher, then, has all their materials and curricula prepared for them, with help from Pearson

That doesn’t mean there’s nothing for an English teacher to do on Voxy, though. Far from it. Having another language is key, as it helps to ease the transition into English learning. You have to teach a student in a task-based style, helping them to navigate particular language scenarios and describe situations.

Essentially, it’s a tutoring job, but with the bonus of having an advanced technological infrastructure there to help a tutor teach English and a student learn English. Yes, the classes are designed for you, but you've still got to review a student's progress, provide helpful feedback, and generally keep the classes moving. A student's course is updated daily, so make sure to review the next lesson in advance.

How Much Does Voxy Pay Teachers?

So now, it’s time to speak about pay: what’s the teach English online salary like for doing private tutoring with Voxy?

The base rate that Voxy pays is between $15-$18/£12-£14 per hour. It’s also worth noting that after you join the company, Voxy will give increments of $0.50/£0.39 every six months, and you are also paid for the 5 minutes of preparation taken before classes, which works out at an additional $2.50/£2 per hour.

In terms of how Voxy pay, you will be asked to provide invoices via Google Sheets twice a month on a specific date. Then, if you’re in the USA, you’ll be paid directly into your bank account. For everyone else, you’ll receive your salary via PayPal, which involves a 4.5% fee.

If a teacher is 10-15 minutes late, students are refunded for their class in full. A no-show without explanation (or without a satisfactory reason) can result in the termination of your employment with the company.

The application process for Voxy

So how does a Business English teacher join the employees at Voxy? We’ll take you through each step of how the process to join Voxy works, and even give you some tips for the interview process.

How do I apply?

Unlike other online education outlets, Voxy works more traditionally. You’ll need to send a copy of your CV as well as composing a cover letter in which you’ll have to answer the following questions:

  • Why do you love teaching ESL?
  • How do you feel that you would be a good fit for Voxy’s task-based, contextual learning methodology?
  • What do you like about task-based teaching?

We would recommend searching for examples of successful Voxy cover letters before you finish writing. Also, just as the courses are updated daily, the questions you need to answer may change.

Assignment

If you match Voxy’s job specifications, the company will reach out to you and ask you to complete an assignment. Normally, you’ll be asked to design a lesson plan which reflects the task-based education that Voxy uses to help clients learn English. You’ll be given a specific example of a task, for example, booking a haircut or taking a car to the garage, and your lesson plan must be about how a student would negotiate this situation.

You’ll be given a date for finishing the assignment, which is usually two days after it’s sent. Pass that, and you’ll be called for an interview.

Interview 1

Successful applicants will conduct two interviews with Voxy. The first interview will be focused on your experience, your motivation to be a Voxy employee and your availability. You’ll be told about how Voxy works, how the payment structure works, and how their bespoke technology is used. There are some more tasks; employees have spoken about being asked to answer a quiz based on company videos and forming a lesson plan for clients who want to learn English but have a low level of proficiency.

Interview 2

If you’ve passed the first interview, you’ll be given a date for a second and final interview with Voxy. This time, it’s all about your methodology to help clients learn English. Specifically, you’ll be asked to show off your expertise in crafting real-life, situational scenarios for learners. You’ll also need to show how you would support a client who is making grammatical mistakes, and how you’d fix any problems, teaching phrases as you go.

If you pass this interview, you’ll receive an offer to join the company and help support English learners to become fluent speakers.

What to consider before you start

So you’ve landed a job with Voxy, a personalised language learning app and website. What should you consider before launching into that first group or solo class, helping businesspeople from around the world learn English?

Pros and Cons

Although Voxy is in many respects quite a unique proposition for TEFL teachers, there are also relevant pros and cons, like anywhere teaching English. Let’s explore the most pressing advantages and disadvantages.

Pros

  • Flexibility: You have to teach 10 hours a week. Beyond that, your ability to earn and teach is pretty much yours to decide.
  • Non-native speakers: Fluent speakers of English, whether native to an English-speaking country or not, are welcome.
  • Training and support: If you’re looking to upskill and take on some career development, Voxy will let you do that.
  • Networking: As far as connections go, you could be rubbing shoulders with some big names in world economics before long. If you have plans to freelance later on, this could be crucial networking.
  • Infrastructure: Lesson plans are updated daily, there’s an app for clients, and the software for booking lessons is industry-leading. Voxy's learners study their way to proficiency via private tutoring and group lessons, all supported by a helpful infrastructure which makes organising classes super easy.

Cons

  • Another language: You have to be fluent in another language, preferably Spanish or Portuguese. You'll need to have all of the relevant business vocabulary in these languages to make a smooth transition to teaching phrases in English.
  • Requirements: The requirements for Voxy staff are very lofty indeed. Does the pay reflect that? That’s your call, but some Voxy tutor reviews would suggest not.
  • Single-minded: If you’re not interested in task-based learning from a teaching perspective, you might soon discover that you're not enjoying the classes.
  • Harsh penalties: You can’t really afford to miss a class or two on Voxy. Tutors have been sacked immediately for missing classes. That’s a high-pressure environment to be in, and former employees have written many reviews with this in mind.
  • Business English only: Voxy's learners study specific phrases and particular situations. If you have no interest in teaching businesspeople, then you won’t have any fun.

Voxy reviews

So what do Voxy reviews say? What level of support is there for employees, what do tutors make of the pay, and what other relevant factors come into Voxy reviews?

On Indeed, Voxy is rated 3.5 out of 5 from a limited number of reviews. The culture of the company and the support on offer to employees scores extremely well, but the lack of job security and the salaries aren’t viewed quite as kindly.

Glassdoor gives Voxy a rating of 4 out of 5, which is considerably high for an online education company. Again, the product itself and the culture rank highly, with 72% stating they’d recommend the company to a friend. Tutors enjoy the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and the flexible hours. However, there are starkly contrasting reviews in terms of how helpful upper management is to employees, while the hours aren’t spoken about with a great deal of happiness.
